I just viewed "Battleship" on a date evening with my hubby, and my verdict is:
It's a fun action film with a decent story...I recommend it!
Here is what I liked about it (without giving you story details):
One of the stars is an actual veteran. I love that! Gregory D. Gadson is an Army veteran of more than 20 years of service to our country, and he hails from Chesapeake, Virginia (right around the corner from my hometown of Hampton, Va.) He is a bilateral, above the knee amputee, and he puts in a strong turn as Lt. Col. Mick Canales.
There are several much older veterans who are part of the action of the story. That is all I can say without giving away part of the movie, but suffice it to say that I love, love, love the inclusion of these guys and the roles they played in battling the aliens. Well done, Peter Berg!
The women in this movie are smart and courageous...and beautiful. Both Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker get to show their savvy and toughness and sassiness, all while being fiercely feminine.
The movie slickly ties in elements from Hasbro's game of the same name. I was curious to see how Mr. Berg (the director) would bring in things like the grid and locating the enemy targets, and I was pleasantly surprised how seamlessly they were woven in.
The action is big, the gore and carnage seen on screen are next to none, and the language is kept to a minimum. I enjoyed seeing great big explosions on screen WITHOUT having the accompanying blood and guts that usually follow. We got the point that lives were lost without having to see it to drive home the point. As far as language, there was the s-word, son-of-a ....,and a a couple of mother..., from which they cut away before hearing the f-bomb portion (it was implied without being heard, if that helps to know what I mean.) I thought we were all clear after that, but one older guy let out a slightly muffled God-.... towards the last 1/4 of the movie. I am most sensitive to that one, so it won't make my collection. That is unfortunate because all in all, I really enjoyed watching it.
I wasn't sure how good this movie would be, being based on a board game and all. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the tight-weave of the storyline and the unfolding of the action. I thought it honored the men and women of our military, and that made me proud.
For those reasons alone, I give "Battleship" my recommendation. Enjoy the big action as a favorite board game hits the big screen!

Good write-up Dee. Every time I think about it, I change my mind. It has some good moments, but that's about it and is bogged down by seeming like just another Michael Bay flick, which is sort of what this film was going for in the first place.
Thanks, Dan! Yes, I hear you. I tell people that if you just want to see a clean movie, straight action, a decent story, and lots of big screen explosions, this is the movie for you.
